Dietary fiber and glucose tolerance in Japanese Brazilians.

چکیده
A lthough the evidence for a protective effect of high total dietary fiber intakes on diabetes appears to be strong (1), the role of food sources of dietary fiber in the etiology of impaired glucose disturbances is poorly understood (2). Epidemiological studies suggest that high intakes of whole grain foods (3,4) and vegetables (5–7) may prevent diabetes. On the other hand, the impact of consumption of fruits and fruit juices (5,6,8), legumes (5,9), and refined grains (3,10) has been investigated in a few controversial investigations. Here, we evaluated the relationship between fiber-related dietary factors and the risk of impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) among Japanese Brazilians.

Elevated C-Reactive Protein, Abdominal Obesity, and Glucose Tolerance Status in Japanese-Brazilians
Although evidences indicate that C-reactive protein (CRP) levels are independent predictors of type 2 diabetes (DM), some studies either did not support this association or examine it extensively throughout the stages of glucose tolerance. In a cross-sectional population-based survey, we investigated the relation between CRP and the risk of newly diagnosed impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), and ...

OBJECTIVE Interethnic marriage between nikkey Brazilians and non-nikkey Brazilians may favor the westernization of diet. Dietary consumption, clinical data and frequencies of metabolic diseases were compared in a Japanese-Brazilian population, with intraethnic or interethnic marriage. METHODS T test, Mann-Whitney, chi-square and Person coefficient were used. RESULTS Among 1009 Japanese-Braz...
متن کاملVariants of transcription factor 7-like 2 (TCF7L2) gene and incident glucose intolerance in Japanese-Brazilians.
Common variants of the transcription factor 7-like 2 (TCF7L2) gene have been found to be associated with type 2 diabetes in different ethnic groups. The Japanese-Brazilian population has one of the highest prevalence rates of diabetes. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to assess whether two single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of TCF7L2, rs7903146 and rs12255372, could predict the d...
متن کامل[Dietary intake and macrovascular disease in a Japanese-Brazilian population: a cross-sectional study].
OBJECTIVE To describe the food intake of Japanese-Brazilians with and without macrovascular disease (MVD). METHODS MVD was defined, for 1,165 Japanese-Brazilians, by scores attributed to the health historical, electrocardiogram and ankle-brachial index values. The usual dietary intake was determined using a food frequency questionnaire. RESULTS The MVD prevalence was of 3.2%, being similar ...

OBJECTIVE We evaluated the changes in biochemical and nutritional profiles of Japanese-Brazilians with and without metabolic syndrome after two years of participation in the intervention program. MATERIALS AND METHODS It was a non-controlled experimental study. The biochemical and clinical assessments were conducted at baseline (2005), after a year (2006) and after two years (2007) of interve...
